Leon Shields
Regional Manager & Unemployment Specialist
After finishing his military obligation in 1971, Mr. Shields returned to the Alamance Community College to finish a two year degree in Business Administration. In 1973, he enrolled at Appalachian State University in the transfer program. He graduated in 1976 with a Bachelor of Technology degree.
In 1977, Shields joined the Employment Security Commission, where he spent the last 34 years learning the services provided by the Commission. In addition to intake interviewing, he has worked in unemployment claims processing and adjudication. He worked for about 25 years in the tax department. His field work was centered around applying the tax law to determine liability for coverage for the general employer public as well as auditing employer records to insure compliance with the Employment Security Law. He has worked as a regional manager supervising up to 25 auditors.
Most recently, Mr. Shields joined The HR Group as Regional Manager & Unemployment Specialist where he helps clients understand the inner workings of the Employment Security Commission and minimize costly claims.
