Experience and Expertise:

Mel Asbury, SPHR, is Sr. Vice President of The HR Group Inc, an HR consulting and training firm based in Greensboro, NC. With 30+ years of human resources experience, Asbury has held senior HR leadership positions in a broad array of industries from biotech to telecommunications and has worked and consulted with Glaxo SmithKline, Exxon Mobil, IBM, Novant Health and dozens of other companies. Several of the firms in which he led the HR function achieved national and state recognition from "Working Mothers Magazine" and "Best Places to Work" Institute after implementing strategic diversity initiatives. He has worked with all types of employees and varying levels of management. Asbury has designed and delivered competency based executive education and professional development programs throughout the U.S. and internationally.

His areas of focus include diversity issues, leadership development, outdoor experiential team building, Total Quality Management, business coaching and career development for minority, women and HR professionals. His experience encompasses mergers and acquisitions, startups, organizational redesign projects, and other innovative HR programs that impact human productivity.

Mel is a member of the Board of Directors of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). He is also a member of the World at Work Compensation Association, American Society for Healthcare Human Resources Administration, the American College of Healthcare Executives, the National Association of African Americans in Human Resources, and the Stock Plan Administrators Association. He has served on the board of United Way, Goodwill Industries, and Communities in Schools. Asbury was also named "Human Resources Professional of the Year" in North Carolina by SHRM.

  • Masters in Industrial Relations from Purdue University
  • Obtained his business coaching certification through UNC/Duke University
